Requirements For Shipping Human Remains (HUM)

This week, I've been busy enough assisting my cousin in facilitating the papers regarding the cadaver to be sent home from Manila to Butuan.

This post is for those who are looking for the requirements about sending human remains or transferring the cadaver from one place to another through plane. I hope this could help someone like me who have no idea at first. All you have to do is complete the necessary requirements with proper coordination with the funeral service personnel.

Planning to send a cadaver or human remains won't take long. All we need to have are the following based on Cebu Pacific Cargo:
  • Three (3) Photocopies of the Following:
  1. Death Certificate
  2. Embalming Certificate
  3. Quarantine Permit from Bureau of Quarantine - DOH
  4. Transfer Permit or Permit to Transport from the Municipal / City Health Office
*Original documents shall be presented upon transfer of the Cadaver.
  • Coffin must be hermitically sealed and crated
  • Shipments must be at the cargo area at least 3 hours before the flight

Death Certificate
- can be acquired at the office of the civil registrar.

Transfer Permit
- Submit a death certificate accompanied by Barangay certificate and funeral contract at the municipality's civil registrar. Payment should not be higher than P300 or depending on each municipality. You will be asked to take a heath certificate at the City Health Center located within the Municipal Hall. Health Certificate is included in the payment.

Embalming Certificate
- a certificate of embalming is acquired through the funeral service provider. The funeral knows about it and you will be asked about the necessary documents. They also needed those document you have with you as mentioned above

Quarantine
- this is the last thing furnished by funeral personnel together with the receipt. Payment for this is P300.

When you already completed these documents, you can arranged the booking personally or through phone call. You will be given an Air Way Bill number needed by the cargo section for the sticker (to be attached at the top of the crate).

Be sure to carry the cadaver at the cargo section 3 hours before the desired flight or as early as possible depending on the arrangement to avoid hassle. First, you have to fill-up a form. Then, the cargo shall be weighed to get the correct weight. Next, you will be directed to their staff for assessment before a sticker is issued as I mentioned above. Next, the cargo will be scanned at the scanning section then you go back to the staff who issued the sticker which will then asked you to make payment. That's all.

With our experience, our cargo weighted 197 kilograms which cost P5,180. Hope this will give someone an idea of how much they will going to spend sending a cadaver. Just remember to give the papers together with the documents mentioned above to the escort for claiming the cargo upon arrival at destination.

Hi! Just want to ask how many days did it take for you to get the quarantine certificate?

About the quarantine certificate, in our case it was the funeral service provider who handled the processing. It was given to us a day before the scheduled shipping of the remains knowing beforehand that we decided to send the cadaver to Mindanao. Kindly asked them about it.

Hi! You can get the quarantine certificate in as fast as 15-20 minutes depending ofcourse on the number of people/patients handled by the Doctor on duty. The documentation will only cost you 200php (domestic) and 500php for international flights (incoming/outgoing)

Also, dont forget to bring with you a photocopy of the mentioned documents para less hassle. Wala pong photocopy sa loob ng airport.

Hi! Here is the contact number of the Bureau of Quarantine (02)320 91 01-17.

You just have to bring the documents such as airway bill, orig and photocopy of death certificate and embalming certificate. When you arrive from KL, proceed to bureau of quarantine office before going immigration counters and there, you can process and get the quarantine permit.
